International Patients reaping the Benefits of TAVR Procedure in India
Overview There are millions of people, who suffer from varied kinds of Cardiac disorders, which need extremely specialized forms of treatment approaches. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) also occasionally referred to as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is one of the most advanced Cardiac procedures that is proving immensely beneficial for numerous heart patients. This advanced procedure is used to treat a Cardiac condition called severe form of Aortic Valve Stenosis. This condition happens when the heart’s Aortic Valve narrows and the smooth blood flow that happens from the primary chamber of the heart to the rest of the body is hindered. Problems erupt when this particular valve narrows significantly and puts a lot of pressure and stress on the heart muscle. Along with this, as a person ages, this valve hardens due to the calcium deposits that gather with passing time. This leads to the occurrence of difficult symptoms like uneasiness in the chest region, fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling in the leg, light-headedness, Syncope that is passing out spells and the results can be fatal too.

There are two approaches through which this surgery is attempted:
Transfemoral Approach – In this, a delivery Catheter is passed via the Femoral Artery in the leg. But if there is too much blockage then this approach is avoided because if there is not enough space, then the artery can get damaged from the delivery catheter. After giving anaesthesia, an incision is made in the patient’s leg via which the surgeon passes a hollow tube called the sheath. Then a catheter with a balloon at the end is passed via the sheath to reach the Aortic Valve. The balloon is inflated with fluid to open the tapering artery and the new valve is placed on the delivery system. Then the balloon carrying the valve is puffed up with fluid to enlarge it inside the damaged valve. The new valve pushes the leaflets of the damaged valve aside and thus the new valve is positioned appropriately with the help of the leaflets of the damaged valve. Once this is done, the balloon is deflated and taken out. After the surgeon is sure that the valve is working aptly, the sheath is removed and incision is closed.
Transapical Approach – If the above approach is not possible then this approach is implemented. This is done by making an incision in the chest region between the ribs. Then via the left ventricle of the heart, the new valve is positioned.Once the patient is placed under anaesthesia, an incision is made in the chest specifically between the ribs to access the lowest section of the heart, which is also known as the apex. Then the doctor passes the sheath through the apex into the left ventricle. Then the catheter is passed through the sheath to access the Aortic Valve. Then to open the narrowed artery, the balloon at the end of the catheter is inflated with fluid. The steps after this are same like the above mentioned approach.
Transaortic Approach – In this approach, there is an incision made in the upper chest region, via which the surgeons passes the sheath. The rest of the steps are like the above mentioned approaches.
